Modest Thanksgiving Outfit Ideas: Dresses, Skirts & Cozy Looks for the Holidays

Thanksgiving has a way of sneaking up on me every single year. One minute I'm on summer family vacation, and the next I'm trying to remember who's bringing the sweet potatoes and where all the extra chairs went. Somewhere in the middle of all that, there's always the question: what am I going to wear?

For me, the perfect modest Thanksgiving outfit has to do a few things at once. It needs to feel special – this is a day for gathering, giving thanks, and probably a few family photos (if you're my family, a lot of family photos). But it also has to be comfortable enough to cook in, sit through a long meal in, and chase little ones around the yard afterward. And of course, it has to be modest without feeling frumpy.

So I pulled together the pieces I'd genuinely reach for this year – from button down dresses and plaid to smocked bodices and cozy sweaters. These are my favorite Thanksgiving outfit ideas, and I hope one of them makes getting dressed on Thanksgiving morning just a little easier for you.

Simple, But Special: Button Down Dresses

If I had to pick just one dress style for Thanksgiving, it would be a button down dress. There's something about a row of buttons, a structured collar, and a tiered or simple skirt that just feels so fall to me. It looks put-together the moment you put it on, but it's still simple and easy – no fussing, no overthinking.

The Nora Button Front A-Line Dress is one I keep coming back to. The A-line shape is so forgiving (which matters on a day often centered around food!), and the deep, rich color feels perfect for a table full of autumn tones. It's the kind of dress I could wear to church in the morning and straight into dinner without changing a thing. This dress is a bestseller for a reason at Thomas Smith Wear!

If you lean toward softer, lighter colors, the Shirley Printed Button Down Midi Dress in Cream is so pretty. The print is delicate, and the cream gives it a warm, almost vintage feel against all the browns and rusts of the season.

My tip: Thanksgiving weather can be so unpredictable, so I always plan for a chilly morning. Throw a cardigan over either of these dresses and you're set – it adds warmth and makes the whole look feel even cozier.

Thanksgiving Skirt Outfits: Let the Skirt Do the Talking

A statement skirt is always a winner in my book. Pair one with a simple sweater or fitted top, and the skirt brings all the fall flair – while you still feel elegant and comfortable from the first cup of coffee to the last slice of pie.

Here are the skirts I'd build a Thanksgiving outfit around this year:

Della Floral Sheath Midi Skirt in Dark Brown  – a moody floral on a deep brown base is just so fall. It's polished enough for a dressier dinner.

Russell Floral Denim Midi Skirt – denim with a floral twist. This one is perfect if your family Thanksgiving is on the more relaxed side.

Ingalls Embroidered Gingham Midi Skirt – embroidery and gingham together feel so charming and a little nostalgic. I'd pair it with a cream sweater and call it a day.

Hunter Ribbed A-Line Cotton Midi Skirt  – the cozy, easy option. The ribbed cotton feels soft and moves with you, which I love on a long day.

Wilder A-Line Midi Skirt – that patchwork print has so much personality. If you want people asking where you got your skirt, this is the one.

The beauty of a skirt is how much you can mix and match. Tuck in a turtleneck, throw on a chunky cardigan, add a pair of boots – you can make the same skirt feel brand new for Friendsgiving, church, and Thanksgiving Day.

You Can Never Go Wrong with Plaid and Gingham

I'll say this plainly: you can never go wrong with plaid or gingham for Thanksgiving. These prints carry a feeling of nostalgia for me – they remind me of old family photos, long tables, and kitchens that smell like pie crust and casseroles. A plaid Thanksgiving dress feels classic in the best way, and gingham adds a sweet, homey charm.

What I love most is that there's a plaid or gingham piece for every kind of style:

Plaid and Gingham Dresses

Flannery Square Neck Plaid Midi Dress in Brown – the square neckline and warm brown plaid make this one a true Thanksgiving dress. It's my top pick if you want one dress that checks every box.

Willa Plaid A-Line Midi Dress – easy, flattering, and so cozy.

Cleo Cotton Gingham Midi Dress – breathable cotton that keeps you comfortable in a warm kitchen full of people.

Annie Gingham Button Down Dress – gingham and buttons together? Simple, sweet, and timeless.

Vermont Checkered Pinafore Maxi Dress – layer it over a long sleeve top or a turtleneck for a cozy, layered look.

Plaid Tops, Skirts, and Accessories

Kimberly Cotton Blend Button Down Top – tuck it into a solid midi skirt for an easy Thanksgiving skirt outfit.

Tolkien Plaid A-Line Maxi Skirt – pair with a chunky knit sweater for a look that's warm, modest, and so fitting for the season.

Fringe Knit Scarf – If you're not ready to commit to a full plaid outfit, this is the easiest way to add a little warmth and texture to whatever you're wearing.

From dresses to tops to skirts, plaid and gingham bring an instant sense of home to an outfit – and isn't that what Thanksgiving is all about?

The Most Comfortable Thanksgiving Dresses: Smocked Bodices

Let's be honest with each other for a minute. Sometimes on Thanksgiving, the last thing I want is to wear anything tight-fitted. Between a big family meal, second helpings, running around with my nieces and nephews, and helping clean up afterward, the last thing I want is to feel a waistline digging in. Anybody else with me here?

That's exactly why smocked bodice dresses are my go-to for comfortable Thanksgiving outfits. The smocking stretches and moves with you, so the dress still looks shaped and feminine – but you can actually relax and enjoy the day.

Willow Square Neck Smocked Bodice Midi Dress – a longtime favorite around here. The square neckline is so flattering, and it's easy to layer a cardigan over.

Kennedy Cotton Smocked Bodice Dress – soft, breathable cotton that feels good from morning until the end of the day.

A woman modeling a short-sleeve midi dress with a dense multicolor floral print on a beige background, paired with white strappy heeled sandals, set against a plain white studio background.

Jalene Smocked Bodice Maxi Dress – if you love a maxi length, this one is graceful and so comfortable for a long day.

Tallulah Smocked Block Printed Midi Dress – the block print gives it such an artisan, one-of-a-kind look.

Samantha Smocked Back Ditsy Floral Midi Dress – a smocked back means a comfortable fit with a cleaner front, and the ditsy floral is just so sweet.

Comfort and modesty don't have to be a trade-off, and these dresses prove it. You'll look lovely in the family photos and feel good all the way through dessert.

Cozy & Casual Thanksgiving Outfits

Not every Thanksgiving calls for going all out – and that's okay! Some years you're hosting, cooking since 6 a.m., or just want something practical and comfortable all day long. For those long days, these are the pieces I reach for:

Jessie Cotton Fair Isle Sweater in Brown – this sweater has such a vintage look, and the cotton has a real quality feel to it. It's the kind of sweater you'll pull out every November for years to come.

Quinn Cotton Utility Jacket – perfect for a crisp walk after dinner or a Black Friday morning. Toss it over a dress or a sweater and skirt.

Rachel Nursing Friendly Maxi Dress – for the mamas: a nursing-friendly Thanksgiving dress that's easy, comfortable, and still feels like you made an effort.

Jordyn Drop Sleeve Sweater and Margo Stretch Denim Midi Skirt – a soft, relaxed sweater with a stretch denim skirt is about as easy as a cozy Thanksgiving outfit gets. Add boots and you're set for the day!

More Than What We Wear

At the end of the day, Thanksgiving isn't really about the outfit. It's about the people around the table, the stories that get retold every year, and taking time to thank God for all He's given us. But I do think there's something sweet about getting dressed with a little intention – choosing something that makes you feel like yourself, so you can be fully present during a gathering.

Whether you reach for a plaid midi dress, a smocked bodice you can relax in, or a cozy sweater and denim skirt, I hope you find a modest Thanksgiving outfit here that feels comfortable, beautiful, and just right for your celebration.

Happy Thanksgiving, friends! 🤍

Thanksgiving Outfit FAQs

What should I wear to Thanksgiving dinner? A midi dress or a skirt with a sweater is the easiest choice. Look for warm colors, cozy fabrics like cotton or knit, and a fit that's comfortable for sitting through a long meal. Layer a cardigan or jacket in case the day turns chilly.

What is the most comfortable modest Thanksgiving dress? A smocked bodice dress is hard to beat. The smocking stretches with you, so you stay comfortable through dinner and dessert while the dress still looks shaped and put-together.

Is plaid good for Thanksgiving? Yes! Plaid and gingham are classic Thanksgiving prints. A plaid midi dress, a plaid maxi skirt, or even a knit scarf adds a warm, nostalgic feel to any outfit.
